Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011

Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2011 as a piece of progressive legislation designed to protect the interests of cultivators and other landowners when their lands were to be acquired for pubic purposes. It was hoped that the new legislation shall undo the inequities of the colonial land-acquisition procedures and obviate the need for many agitations and prolonged litigation that accompanies land acquisition now. The legislation was expected to especially protect the scheduled tribes and other marginalized cultivating or forest-dwelling communities.

The government has now proposed a long series of official amendments that are likely to undo all the protections that the original bill provided.

We are posting here the original bill, the notice of amendments and a memorandum prepared by the Akhil Bharatiya Vanavasi Kalyana Ashram (ABVKA) opposing the amendments.
