Indian Buffalo Meat Facts VI

Handholding of the butcheries by APEDA and the subsidies offered by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries has had its impact. India today is the world’s largest exporter of beef.* According to the data released by US Department of Agriculture India exported 2.4 million tons of beef and veal (Carcass Weigh Equivalent) compared to 2.0 million tons by Brazil and 1.5 million tons by Australia. India now accounts for 23.5 percent of global beef exports.

Beef has also become the largest exported agricultural commodity from India ahead of Basmati rice since October 2014, according to the Federation of Indian Export Organizations set up by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.

India is the largest beef exporter in the world and beef is the largest agricultural export from India. Reading these statements makes one wonder whether these are referring to our India or to some other India that we do not know about?

Beef by international convention refers to both cow and buffalo meat. Cow beef export from India is banned. Export of 2.4 million tons of beef and veal amounts to the killing of 20 million (2 crore) buffaloes and calves.
